Spinel Mine, Dating From 100 B.C.

Using maps from Marco Polo's descriptions (1200's), British Capt. John Woods (1800), and Danish explorer Olufsen (1800), Gary was able to locate this historic spinel mine at Kuh-e-lal ("mountain of red"). In addition to the maps, a GPS (Ground Positioning System) was used as the party of three walked the 100 miles along the Amu Darya river (formally the Oxus) to find this mine. The mine has produced many of the crown jewels and dates back to 100 B.C.
